Richard F. Loeser, Jr., MD is the Herman and Louise Smith Distinguished Professor in the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy, and Immunology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He is the Director of Basic and Translational Research in the Thurston Arthritis Research Center. He has worked in the area of osteoarthritis research for 25 years and has published over 135 manuscripts. He was awarded the OARSI Basic Science Research Award in 2014 for his work on basic mechanisms driving cartilage destruction in OA and the role of aging.
